Operations Challenge is a national competition supported by WEF in which teams of four wastewater professionals compete in five different events to test the diverse skills required to operate and maintain water resource recovery facilities, collection systems, and laboratories. A weighted point system determines the winners.
The five events include:

  • Process control
  • Maintenance
  • Collections Systems
  • Laboratory
  • Safety

RMWEA has a long history of participation in Operations Challenge, first competing locally in 1992 and nationally at WEFTEC in 1993. RMWEA holds an annual regional competition to determine which teams earn an opportunity to compete nationally. RMWEA has produced a number of Overall National Championship Teams.

The most recent wins for the Rocky Mountain Region include:

  • 2023 Division I third-place team: Metro Water Recovery’s Elevated Ops
  • 2023 Division II second-place team: Metro Water Recovery’s Double Duty

In addition to competing as part of a team, Operations Challenge offers many ways to get involved. Volunteers are needed as local and national judges, event coordinators, supporting staff, and community members.  Sponsorships are also available to raise funds to support the regional teams through the Annual Operations Challenge Golf Tournament and Regional Competition.
